Rajnath Singh

Rajnath Singh, born on July 10, 1951, is an Indian politician and a senior BJP leader. He is the Defence Minister of India. He has previously served as the Home Minister (from 2014-2019), Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh (from 2000-2002) and was twice appointed as the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (from 2005 to 2009 and 2013 to 2014).

He was born in the Chittor district of Uttar Pradesh to Ram Badan Singh and Gujarati Devi. He received his Master's Degree in Physics from Gorakhpur University. At the age of 13, he got associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Singh started his political career in 1975 as the Bhartiya Jan Sangh district president of Mirzapur, UP. He soon rose through the ranks and was appointed as the state education minister in 1991. In 1994, he was elected as a Rajya Sabha MP, which was followed by him becoming the UP state president for the BJP. He has also held the post of Union Minister for Agriculture in 2003 under the Vajpayee government and was appointed as the national general secretary of BJP in 2004.

He has also authored a book 'Unemployment: Its Reasons and Remedies'. Rajnath Singh is married to Savitri Singh and has two sons and a daughter.
