Sambhal is a newly established district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, with its headquarters located in the Bahjoi town. It is part of the Moradabad division and spans a geographical area of 2,453 square kilometres.
The district comprises one Lok Sabha constituency and four Legislative Assembly constituencies, including the Sambhal assembly segment.
According to the 2011 census, Sambhal has a population of approximately 2.2 million, with a population density of 987 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio stands at 940 females per 1,000 males, and the literacy rate is 57 per cent.
Historically, it is believed that during the 12th century, Prithviraj Chauhan, the last Hindu ruler of Delhi, fought two battles here against Ghazi Sayyid Salar Masud, the nephew of Mahmud of Ghazni, the ruler of the Ghaznavid Empire. However, due to a lack of concrete evidence, this is widely regarded as a legend.
Sambhal was officially declared one of the three new districts of Uttar Pradesh on September 28, 2011. Initially named "Bhimnagar," it was later renamed Sambhal. The district is located 158.6 kilometres from New Delhi and 355 kilometres from Lucknow, the state capital.
